Protecting Oneself - Spider (2021)

What circulates? How do we make connections with the outside world? How do make sense of it? How do you change to protect yourself from an environment that wants to kill you, that sees emotion as a weakness?

I started this project inside the last one, the hallway. Trying to find elements, repetition, themes that I will want to explore more in detail. Images of ribcages, hearth and insects were the ones that caught my eyes. This leads to the question: who has lived in this space and represented itself in the drawings?

The hearth is only maintained in place by the pressure of both the ribcage of the suit and the one of the performer, uniting both. The performer becoming the creature, becoming this human/spider hybrid.

The performer/researcher, by enacting the moves of this hybrid creature human/spider, is trying to understand how it moved, how it lived in the abandoned parking, away from the general population. Its performance is only known to the persons that walk by.

The spider is a weaver, a teller, a protector, and a way to protect itself because of its appearance. Repulsing the ones that are hurting it only by look but will let its feeling shown to the ones that take the time to listen to it, to watch it, to interrogate it. With its many legs used as a sensory organ, feeling the outside world, letting the information circulates through its body and adapting to it. Catching prey and objects with its web, what will it catch?
